I crossed that line, Atlantic blue
At no other time had I ever seen this place on earth
Full of cries and full of life
I saw everyone and I loved everything in Istanbul
Now I see, I got this wrong
I loved everything, and misjudged everyone in Istanbul
I thought I heard a call so clear
And I thought I was right, and I thought that I had a mission here
I saw eyes in sunken places
To be the hands
To dance and sing
To tell of what we were raised to think
But all those eyes, and open ears
Had their own ways, had their own fears
Who were we to say, who was wrong here?
I fell into a waking dream
Where I spoke in their tongue
And knew everyone in Istanbul
From the plane, receding view
I thought about home and I thought about leaving what I knew
It was I in sunken places
